As age grows on me I see things I could not understand as a young man.
The natives that lived here prior to the arrival of the Europeans had culture, laws and respect for other tribes. Like us they had renegades that did not want to follow the rules.
We the Europeans distroyed their culture, their history and their livelihood. We put them on reservations to control them and continued to destroy their culture, language and history.
The black man was enslaved and sold by his neighbors. They were purchased by many different countries as slave labor. Not just here in the USA!
Once they were "freed" after the Civil War they built communities apart from their white neighbors and were quite successful. They had respect for each other and their white neighbors.
Someone decided they needed to be integrated into our society and didn't pay any attention the failures of the assimilation of the native Americans.
Somewhere in time we lost respect for our neighbors of color or did they lose respect for us?
The Spaniards assimilated and destroyed many civilizations and cultures. Possibly we are following their lead !
Respect is earned! One of the definitions of respect is: due regard for the feelings, wishes, rights or traditions of others. The other is feeling of deep admiration for someone elicited by their abilities, qualities or achievements.
The door of respect swings both ways. You must show the other person you have due regard for their life.
There are several movements in our country today that do not understand respect.
It is all one way, bow down to my demands or I'll destroy and pillage your homes, business and life.
All sides have made major mistakes I think if you put things in pespective the percentages are really small. Which in turn makes certain movements divisive and disrespectful. Think about it!
